Hey … I’m into facebook because it’s a way I connect with my “Friends” … some of them are are real friends… they are really people whom I know and love… some of them are acquaintances that I have come to know and correspond with at times… (even though I had to look up how to properly spell acquaintance…) and there are humans who have clicked my link because they felt inclined by something I published there… and then there are the stalkers…
So many businesses say I REACH MY AUDIENCE WITH FACEBOOK… Facebook actually posts a number that says REACHED below a post…
So what does that really mean…
Well I decided to look that up because I’m very curious… and what I found was interesting… especially as a business owner of a RADIO STATION…
It means NOTHING…
For instance, I drove to the airport today from Mangrove Bight… I imagine that I passed about 2-3000 people who may have seen my car over that trip… and a few chickens and maybe even a couple of horses… and one cow… and a man on a scooter with his wife and two children and their mother-in-law … and a refrigerator… so technically I REACHED all of them… Woo hoo for me…
BUT not so much for my business … because they didn’t care about my business at all… because I didn’t talk to them about it, get them to get involved with it… nada…
Going back to FACEBOOK … It only means that it was shown in a news feed… and the more friends you have, the more people get posted in your news feed… meaning that it may post there… but it may not be seen at all…
SO as a business owner, what I’m looking for is the NUMBER of people who actually ARE ENGAGED in the post… Here’s what FACEBOOK says…
How is engagement rate defined?
Engagement rate is the percentage of people who saw a post that liked, shared, clicked or commented on it.
To see the engagement rate for your posts:
- At the top of your Page, click Insights
- Click Posts
- Scroll down to All Posts Published
- Click to the right of Post Clicks / Likes, Comments & Shares
- Select Engagement Rate from the dropdown menu
So… unless our customers are doing that… it’s just kind of a cool thing to do to have a place to refer them to where they can see what we are doing… it’s not actively getting into their brains… unless it engages them…
Damn… and I thought I was so smart posting a picture of a guy on a scooter with a refrigerator…

It’s good to hear from you in writing Madison. FB is evidently very good at many things including (as I read today) increasing the divorce rate exponentially (because of people hooking up with prior friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc,). However, it’s not always good at what many people think it’s good at! ~Sorry for ending in a preposition there. Thank you for sharing one way to get more realistic information from FB; it would be helpful for people like me, if you would post to FB every time you post here, and by all means, include pictures of the goats on the side of the road, or the scooters with refrigerators on their backs! I might add that your FB posts have dropped off significantly (I understand you’re working hard on your wonky transmitter, etc.), but I miss knowing you’re there and still a part of my life somewhere in the world. Also, you might want to check into Google Analytics for more real time information on your site traffic. San Diego misses you my friend, and so do I (into whatever category I may fall) 🙂
